Music & Craic

Oldcastle itself plays host each week to a number of traditional bands in the local pubs. There is also a night club in Oldcastle

Walking

Loughcrew Megalithic Cairns or Lough Crew is an area of great historical importance a short drive from Oldcastle.   It is home to a group of megalithic tombs dating back to the 4th millennium BC, which sit on top of a range of hills.  A short climb will bring you to the top where in summer months the OPW allow visitors to enter the tomb and view this historical sight.

The village of Fore, approx. 12km from Oldcastle, is well worth a visit to view the famous Seven Wonders of Fore.

If you like to walk through the pictureseque countryside, then the Loughcrew Way is an ideal walk of 4 to 8 miles starting in Oldcastle and making your way up to Sliabh na Callighe, you will come across some of the most scenic areas of Counties Meath, Cavan and Westmeath. Mullaghmeen Forest Park is another wonderful walk just a small drive from Oldcastle.  There are three looped walks suitable for all levels.

 

Gardens

Loughcrew historic gardens, a restored 17th and 19th century gardens is situated a small drive from Oldcastle town.

Tullynally Castle and Gardens, in Castlepollard has over 12 acres of various gardens to enjoy.

Music Festivals

Oldcastle plays host to “Le Cheile Arts & Music Festival” every August with a weekend filled with well-known stand-up comedians and bands.
There are a number of other music festivals like Body & Soul which run annually around the Oldcastle area. Each year at Loughcrew we have Opera and Jazz parties. In Mullingar there is the annual summer Country Music Festival.

Equestrian

Oldcastle is in the heart of Meath Equetrian activities. If it’s just a leisurely hack around quiet country roads or an intensive week of hunting, show-jumping, or eventing, it’s all within easy reach.

Hunting

The Fincourt is in the heart of Hunting country with no less then 5 parks all located within a 30 minute drive.  The Ballymacad Hunt are based in Oldcastle, The Meath Hunt, The Westmeath’s, The Tara’s and Ward Union all hunting throughout Co. Meath.  We can arrange horse hire locally and transport to meet.

Shopping

Navan, Cavan and Mullingar Shopping Centres provide excellent shopping less than a half hour away, or Blanchardstown and Liffey Valley Shopping Centres in Dublin, approx. an hour away.

Fishing

Located in the North West corner of Meath, we are surrounded by the lakes of Cavan and Westmeath, including Lough Sheelin, Lough Ramor, Lough Derraghvara, Lough Bane, Lough Lene and the River Blackwater, “any fisherman’s dream”.

Golf

Within 40 minutes drive you can reach some of the country’s most challenging courses, including Headfort Golf Club, Kells & Royal Tara, Trim, you also have The Radisson Farnham Estate Golf and Slieve Russell, both in Cavan,  indeed there is a different course for every day of the week.

Cycling

Cycling in Meath gives you a wonderful opportunity to see first hand the countryside we are luck to have on our doorstep.  Whether you want to go for a leisurely cycle or more of a challenge, there is something for everyone.
