Nature & Outdoor Activities

Loughcrew Megalithic Cairns or Loughcrew is an area of great historical importance a short drive from Oldcastle. It is home to a group of megalithic tombs dating back to the 4th millennium BC, which sit on top of a range of hills.  A short climb will bring you to the top where in summer months the OPW allow visitors to enter the tomb and view this historical sight.

The village of Fore, approx. 12km from Oldcastle, is well worth a visit to view the famous Seven Wonders of Fore.

Mullaghmeen Forest Park is another wonderful walk just a small drive from Oldcastle.  There are three looped walks suitable for all levels.

Girley Bog Eco Walk: Experience a tranquil walk through one of Ireland’s most pristine raised bogs, offering a unique glimpse into the country’s natural heritage.

Causey Farm: Engage in traditional Irish farming activities, from turf cutting to baking soda bread, providing a hands-on cultural experience.

 

Hunting

The Fincourt is in the heart of Hunting country with no less then 5 packs all located within a 30 minute drive.  The Ballymacad Hunt are based in Oldcastle, The Meath Hunt, The Westmeath’s, The Tara’s and Ward Union all hunting throughout Co. Meath.  We can arrange horse hire locally and transport to meet.

Fishing

Located in the North West corner of Meath, we are surrounded by the lakes of Cavan and Westmeath, including Lough Sheelin, Lough Ramor, Lough Derraghvara, Lough Bane, Lough Lene and the River Blackwater, “any fisherman’s dream”.

Golf

Within a 40-minute drive of Oldcastle, you’ll find some of Ireland’s most scenic and challenging golf courses. From Headfort Golf Club in Kells to Royal Tara in Trim, and further afield to The Radisson Farnham Estate and Slieve Russell in Cavan, there’s a different course for every day of the week – ideal for both casual golfers and seasoned players looking to test their skills.
